Helpful Hints

  • Some species of tree make better firewood than others. Ash, oak, beech, birch, alder and hornbeam are among the best hardwood heat producers. Conifers such as pine and spruce burn very hot but unfortunately they burn away very quickly.
  • Kiln dried hardwood logs arrive with you in a dry condition. Do not let them get wet again. Keep them in a dry environment where rain cannot reach them.
  • When you are using kiln dried kindling there is no need to use a lot of sticks. The kindling is very dry and will light quickly and in turn will light your kiln dried logs. In a few minutes you will have a good bright burning fire.
  • You can burn kiln dried logs in a smokeless zone. You cannot burn damp logs in these areas.
  • Do not put on too big a fire as kiln dried logs burn very hot. Manage your air controls to maximise value from logs.
  • Use a flue gauge! A flue gauge tells you exactly how hot your stove is burning.  It has a magnetic fitting which connects to your flue and only costs a few pounds. They are a good investment.
  • Kiln dried logs helps eliminate the problems of blackening of the door glass and the build up of tar in the flue or chimney. Kiln dried logs protect your stove as well as your guarantee. Use of wet logs can invalidate stove guarantees.
